Publication
The publication of a NSW Heritage Reference Manual is shortly
on its way. Rappoport has recognized a need for a single volume
reference becoming available for students, planners, architects,
managers, owners and others involved in the built heritage
environment. Conservation and heritage has many arcane
meanings and the public is largely confused by its ambivalence.
In this regard, Rappoport has commenced writing the definitive
‘NSW Heritage Reference Manual’. In its pages, there will be
simple explanations on a wide range of concepts, ideas and
issues. Central to its motivation is the need for clarity and
certainty in the heritage approval process. For instance, what is
the meaning of ‘curtilage’; who owns heritage; what is the nature
of heritage significance – how can it become less subjective;
what is a conservation management plan; how does one set out
a heritage impact statement. These questions and more go to
the heart of establishing common rules for its application in order
to dispel the many negative myths that have evolved around
heritage. Students will benefit from its encyclopaedic purview.
Apart from this, our ‘JOURNAL’ page may be viewed which
already contains 52 separate articles and a Masters thesis on the
‘NSW Heritage Management System’. Some of the topics that
will be covered in the manual are listed on the right.
